Winning streak extended to 5 at Thorncliffe

Posted by admin on October 9, 2012

The Spartans winning streak now stands at five games (in all competitions) after an away win at near neighbours Thorncliffe.

Thorncliffe were much improved over the team the Spartans met in a pre-season friendly a few weeks ago - having signed a few new players and having a well organised game plan.

Game one started with the now usual sleepy, off colour, first half which allowed Thorncliffe to have a number of chances while the Spartans defence chased the ball about. The opening goal of the game came when the Spartans defence and midfield chased the ball into the righ corner and allowed two Thorncliffe players to sit all alone in the box - a shot came in, James made a good save but could do nothing about the rebound as both Thorncliffe players moved in unopposed. Jack Betts did his best to turn the tables with some great runs and at least one shot rattling the post. However, the boys eventually found their feet going forward and Logan Pearce scored the equaliser before the break.

Half time allowed a quick reminder about defensive responsibilities and things were much better in the second half, again Jack Betts threatened with some great runs and shots that deserved goals, hoewever it was Logan Hitchman who scored the go-ahead goal from a speculative shot which the goalie failed to hold on to.

1-2 at the end of the first game.

Game two was a much more awake affair! Jack Bailey stood in for Kian in goal. Thorncliffe came on strong, but the defence held strong with another great performance from Pav and Aman meaning the Spartans midfield and attackers could do their stuff with confidence - but not to be left out Aman unleased a great shot the unfortunately pinged off the bar to safety. Lots of posession and good attacking from the boys eventually paid-off with goals coming from Blade and Pav - topped off by the goal of the game from Morgan. Alfie ran into the corner and made a great cross that Morgan confidently head back across the gaolie into the corner.

Final score - a comfortable 1-5
