U9's lose in Extra Time in Cup

Posted by admin on October 27, 2013

With a sense of dejavue I write this latest match report, this time once again a cup game, once more against a team we have met on numerous occasions, once more a team that I feel we are on a level with and once again we have come away without a win! (These match reports are starting to write themselves).

The weather played a massive part in this game, It literary was coming down sideways and the wind was so strong it even blew the teams bench, coats and bags half way across the pitch!!! But that didn’t stop team 1 who got off to a flyer, within seconds the ball was in the net as Kian closed down play picked up the ball and calmly slotted it past the Wisewood keeper! 1-0 Spartans, & Kian’s grandad Phil was another fiver down!

After that the game settled and was pretty much nip and tuck with both teams coming close on numerous occasions, Owen was Captain and made his first full start for the Spartans after impressing in previous games, I truly believe there is no one else in the squad that can strike a ball better than him! It’s only a matter of time before he connects and scores a screamer, he made the right runs got important tackles in and took some excellent corners, thoroughly deserving his Man of the match award.

Billy was also a contender for Man of the Match, he covered every blade of grass and really got stuck in coming close to scoring on a few occasions, he is getting better week by week, keep it up Bill, maybe next time! Alex pulled off some excellent saves to keep us in the game and managed some great kicks despite kicking into a gale! As always it goes without saying Jake Geci was solid!

There’s not much that gets past him he is proving to be a rock in the heart of defence, he reminds me of an old school centre half from the seventies...

This comparison was confirmed after him chatting to me about Fosters lager as he took his place on the bench during team 2s match!!! Ellis made some great blocks at the back and Harrison was tireless as usual making some excellent runs and doing some great defending.

Matthew Allen came on to make his debut for the Spartans as sub and really made an impact, his runs and tackles were fantastic Unfortunately Wisewood got their noses in front and the game ended 2-1.

Team 2 took to the pitch for the second game and like last week were thoroughly in control.

Applying plenty of pressure and closing down the opposition well, we came close on plenty of occasions but were unlucky not to get on the score sheet early on.

Flynn got into all the right places and battled hard, his runs and passing were excellent, he was unlucky not to get on the score sheet, as usual Matt Morris was all over, breaking up play, pushing forward, dropping back to defend and was even on the end of a full on ball in the face, but in true Matt style he picked himself up dusted himself down and scored an excellent goal.

Luke Geci was brilliant! His timing and composure on the ball is great, both he and Lewis Jones are forming quite a partnership at the back, Lewis is solid too, excellent tracking back brilliant tackles and a lovely right boot deservedly earned him man of the match in the second team.

Josh pulled off some great saves in goal and even managed a Jedi mind trick on Wisewood when they ballooned a penalty over the bar!!! May the force be with you Josh!

William Squires was outstanding again, breaking up play and passing are his forte, he gets stuck in and wears his heart on his sleeve and was rewarded for his efforts with a lovely lobbed goal, this put us 2-1up!

Henry got stuck in with some important well timed tackles at the back and Jake Taylor was his usual slippery self with some great footwork and nifty runs. I was very pleased with the effort all the boys put in despite the shocking weather conditions.

So onto Extra Time, despite putting them under pressure for most of the match and after battling against the weather and an increasingly worsening pitch we slipped to defeat as Wisewood nicked a winner in the last period of extra time. So all in all another close one, where all the lads dug in and gave it 110% but were just shaded despite us bossing large parts of both games.

Once more Lady Luck didn’t show for us... I’m sure that will change soon. Well done boys, keep up the effort, it will come good!!!
