U10 Red suffer last minute agony at home to Wickersley Youth

Posted by admin on October 1, 2013

A bright, sunny but windy day welcomed Wickersley Youth to the Spartans home ground for their first meeting. Having previously won 14-2 and 5-0 in their first two games of the season Wickersly Youth arrived in good form, would the Spartans be up to the challenge.

The Spartans lined up with JB in the goal, William and JD in defence, Logan P on the right wing, Morgan slotting into the central midfield position in the absence of Jacob, Morgan also took on the role of captain for this game. Logan H on the left wing, with Dale starting up front. 12.30 arrived and saw the Spartans kick off, deciding to kick up the slope for the first half.

The game started pretty even with nothing to separate the two teams, JB kept the Spartans in the game pulling off some good saves and distributing the ball well from his goal kicks.

William was caught out of position on one occasion but managed to recover and make a good tackle to keep Wickersley at bay.

Logan H and Dale combined well with some good work down the left side as well as Logan P putting in a good shift down the right and putting the ball into the danger area on a few occasions, but this is where the Spartans have been lacking so far, and they continued to lack that final touch into the net. Working themselves into good positions on numerous occasions the Spartans lacked the killer finish.

Five minutes before half time saw Matt come on for his Spartans debut, coming on to replace Logan H on the left side of midfield.

Some good football from both teams saw the game on an even keel and the score remained 0-0 as the half time whistle was blown.

The half time team talk saw Ali encourage the boys to continue in the same vein and if they found themselves in some space to not be afraid to have a shot.

The second half kicked off in pretty much the same way as the first, very even with not a lot between the two teams. There was more good football played by both teams with them both still deadlocked at 0-0.  The ball came free in the Wickersley area and Logan H saw the ball roll agonisingly wide from his shot.

Morgan was having a good game in the centre of midfield defending well and joining in the Spartan attacks. Rio as always worked tirelessly up and down the right touch line, getting back to defend when needed and creating openings down the right.

The game appeared to be heading for a 0-0 draw with neither team having created an opening for a goal. Then with one minute left on the referees watch (we had just asked him),  up stepped the Wickersley number 6 who had a huge kick on him to fire in a goal from all of 30 yards that was unstoppable.

In what would appear another cruel twist of fate the Spartans came off on the wrong side of a 0-1 score line at the final whistle. Morgan took the Team Player of the Match Trophy for a good performance in the centre of midfield. And once again our spectators win the award for the best 8th man with some Stirling support and encouragement for the boys.

The boys are working hard and have the makings of a really good team, we have not been far away losing by one goal on two occasions and 3 on another then a 3-3 draw.
It is certainly nail biting at times watching the boys, we just lack that finishing touch at the moment, but with some hard work on the training field I am sure that the goals will come and the results will follow. UTS!!! :-)
