U10 Red just fail in close defeat to Tusale

Posted by admin on October 22, 2013

The Spartans greeted Tusale United to the Caribbean Sports Club for the first time on 20th October 2013 and lined up with JB in goal, William and Rio (standing in for JD) in defence, Jacob in the middle of the park with Logan and Morgan out on the wings and Dale up front.

They got underway kicking off at 13.30 and playing down hill in the first half. The game started pretty evenly and soon became a tough, physical competition as we expected it to be. It appeared that the training on being strong in the challenge and not being shoved off the ball was paying off as the Spartans really got stuck in, challenging for every 50/50 and being strong in the tackle.

A great tackle at the back from William sees him break down the left side of the field and play the ball into the path of Josh who puts in a cross from the left for the Spartans first real attack at goal.

Up the other end JB claims the ball really well from  a Tusale corner catching the ball high in the air to keep Tusale at bay.

The game is still at a stalemate and really hotting up, turning into a physical, hard fought battle with the Spartans refusing to give an inch. Matt applies some real pressure on the Tusale defence forcing the defender to make a hurried clearance which rebounds off Matt and goal wards nearly going in.

The Spartans win a corner and the ball is swung into the danger area where Tusale struggle to clear the ball ... step up Morgan, in the right place at the right time to fire the ball in at the back post to score the first goal of the game, 1-0 to the Spartans.

Unfortunately, a lapse of concentration from the Spartans sees Tusale manage to work the ball through the back line and score an equaliser.

The referee blows the whistle for half time and the boys come in drawing level at 1-1, having worked their socks off. The half time team talk sees the boys get plenty of praise for their efforts, the boys are asked to keep the pressure on and work as a team, playing for each other. They are reminded that they are now kicking uphill and will be against it, they have drawn the first half now lets go out and win the second half.

Tusale kick off to start the second half and it is not long before their number 7 unleashes a shot goal wards that looks a sure fire goal. But in the net JB is equal to the shot and with an acrobatic dive to his right JB manages to tip the ball onto the post for what must be the save of the season so far and probably all season!

Not long later Tusale manage to work the ball through the back line and the Tusale number 7 takes his goal well to make it 1-2 to Tusale. However the boys do not let their heads drop and step up a gear to take the game to Tusale. They apply a huge amount of pressure to keep the ball in the Tusale half, creating chances in front of goal but unfortunately as has been the case on a few occasions this season we lack that finishing touch to get the ball in the back of the net, but this is not for a lack of trying from the boys. Shortly after Tusale's second goal JB comes off with an injury to be replaced by Jacob in the net.

Jacob stood up to his challenge in the net well, claiming the ball at every opportunity and sending the ball up field with some huge goal kicks that set the Spartans into an attack up field where the boys won two corners in a row but were unable to finish it off and find that elusive equaliser.

Another solo goal for Tusale sees them extend their lead to 2 goals, 1-3 to Tusale. But still the boys heads do not drop and they continue to battle for themselves, each other and the team.

Two golden opportunities in front of the Tusale goal towards the end aren't taken but are testament to the boys attitude and battling spirit today.

The final whistle is blown and the boys come in losing out by 2 goals. Matt is awarded the Team Player of the Match trophy for really getting stuck in, trying his best and not giving up ... well done Matt.

I am sure that I can speak for everyone involved today when I say that the boys absolutely played out of their skins today, working tirelessly and giving their all, as they were asked ... we can't ask for anymore than that. Personally I don't think we deserved that result but to give Tusale their credit they are a really good and strong team with a stand out player.

Well done Spartans, the boys are really starting to come together and play as a team, working hard as a team with great individuals coming together to form a strong and solid team. This is only the boys first season together, and on that thought they have a really bright future to look forward to ...  UTS!!

Thanks again to everyone supporting the team for giving the boys some great encouragement and for the people who help out, from the kitchen to setting out the pitch ... it is really appreciated :-)
