U10 Black win away at Manton despite slow start

Posted by admin on December 15, 2013

A lovely sunny winter morning saw the SPartans visit Manton for the fist of this seasons return matches.

The Spartans had won the home game 10-0 so hope were high of another high scoring game after last weeks strong win. However, Manton are a different prospect on their home turf, as the small pitch allows them to play a strong pressing game that does not allow the other team time on the ball.

As the game kicked-off it was clear the Spartans were not going to have this game their own way, Manton pressed straight away and forced the boys back into their own area and only a smart save to his left (putting the ball out for a corner) from James kept the scores level. From the resulting corner chaos ensued, but the boys cleared well.

The Spartans were trying to pass the ball as they have done in recent weeks, but were being frustrated as Manton broke up the play repeatedly. However, it was the Spartans who went ahead first as Kieren broke free and crossed the ball for it to be turned in by the Manton defence. This seemed to prompt the boys into life a little and it was soon 2-0 as Kieren profited from some good work by Blade.

Then it was Mantons turn to apply pressure, breaking down the middle and chasing the loose ball. James came out to attempt a clearance and the ball spilled into the goal with a pile of players in the area.

Alex was playing his second game for the Spartans and is starting to get accustomed to the role in his defensive partnerships with Josh and Cam.

The boys finished the second half with a couple of smart goals as Kiern got his second - assisted by Rmarye and then Rmarye lashed home a shot with ultimate confidence after a pss from Bettsy for a 4-1 half-time lead.

The half-time team talk was quite a sturn one from Dan and Dave and the boys responded with a complete turn around in the second half - completely dominating the Manton defence and creating chance after chance. The middle was dominated by Bettsy and Blade, with Alfie, Sam Kieren and Rmarye all taking their turns on the wings to provide crosses for the other boys in attack. Blade got on the scoresheet soon enough assisted by Kieren.

Jamres then almost got an assist as a big kick downfield fell to Kieren who narrowly missed, grazing the right hand post just on the wrong side.

Manton did not pose the same sort of threat in the second half, although they did have a break or two, but most were cleared by the Spartans defence or tidied up by James.

Kieren completed his hat-trick, turning in a great cross from Sam on the right and the scoring was completed by Rmayre who finished off some good work by Alfie (again from the right).

A godd overall result in the end - putting the boys back at the top of the table. Next week a cup quarter final away at Swinton Spartans.
