An early afternoon kick-off welcomed Maltby Miners Welfare to the Caribean Club for the last game of the first half of the season. The game was delayed 15mins as some of the visitors got lost.

From the very first exchanges of the game it was clear that this was going to be a hard game for Maltby. The Spartans were ready to play a good game and Maltby were not the most organised team we have played.

It was soon 1-0 as the Spartans unselfish game exposed the Maltby defence with Rmarye passing to Blade to slot home. Not long after, a Spartans corner was cleared only as far as Josh who had all the time in the world to smash it home into the top corner - goalie had no chance. Blade then doubled his tally for the game after some great work on the right by Alfie who crossed in for Blades second - 3-0.

The Spartans were using the ball well all over the field, with only really a few underhit passes in midfield causing the Spartans defence any sort of prooblem at all. More good work from the flanks allowed Sam in to score his first of the game and the Spartans 4th, before and own goal after Sam chipped the goalie, which hit the bar, then the goalie and went in. 5-0, 15 minutes gone and effectively game over.

Maltby then had a shorts spell of pressure, forcing a couple of corners and with a bit more composure could have got themselves on the scoresheet as James as out of position for a short time.

After that it was back to the Spartans scoring with Rmarye getting in on the act with a very confidently taken goal, again assisted by Alfie on the right. The Spartans were getting behind Maltby's defence regularly and only the keeper or miss hit shots was keeping the score down - again and again the Spartans had two or three players free in the Maltby penalty area. 7-0 came up just before half time as Kieren stripped a Maltby defender and closed in on goal, finishing with his usual confidence.

The second half had the Spartans playing down the slope and the pressure continued as Maltby pretty much fell apart. Sam was again on the scoreheet finishing from a Bettsy pass, then Bettsy got the goal he had been trying for all game to make it 9-0. Rmarye then hit the bar and then the post before Sam got his hatrick goal for 10.0.

Maltby changed their goalie (the little lad who'd been in so far had done a remarkable job).

The Spartans were pressing so much that Cameron, Josh and Blade were defending up on the half way line and James trying to keep in the game all alone in his penalty area. The next goal was a second for Kieren after more fantastic work from Rmarye. Kieren then got his hat-trick as Alfie teed him up for 12-0. There was still time for blade to get a hat-trick, this time it was Kieren providing the assist. 13-0

All in all, the boys did exactly what was required of them - kept playing good football and trying to score good looking goals. No-one got selfish and tried to win it by themselves. The boys will have much harder games than this (James did not get a single touch of the ball in goal the whole game), but they could only play what is put in front of them. Next up a couple of away games before the Cup quarter final at Swinton.
