U10 Black come from behind to win in the Cup

Posted by admin on November 22, 2013

The Spartans first outing in this years League Cup competition saw the boys face unbeaten Eckington Boys - who sit comfortably at the top top of the division above the Spartans. This was always going to be a test for the boys and so it panned out.

The first half kicked off with the Spartans playing up the slope and making good use of the early posession without really troubling the Eckington defence too much. Some good interplay in the midfield releasing passes into spaces only to be mopped up by the Eckington defence.

The danger was always at the other end however as Eckington were well drilled when breaking. Player without the ball would always be in spaces behind the Spartans defence as the boys chased the ball or did not see the player behind them. The first goal of the game came from Eckington. A under hit clearance from james fell to the Eckington midfield who broke into the box and shot, James made a great first save but the Eckington players were unmarked and were ready first to pounce on the free ball.

Not long later it was 2-0 as Eckington again broke down the right and a great cross across the box was turned in at the back post by the unmarked Eckington player.

The Spartans were still playing well in the middle, but were asleep when it came to defending the spare man, and soon enough the boys were on the score sheet as a shot was deflected past the Eckington goalkeeper by his own defender.

However, the age old warning about goals straight from the kick off came true as the Spartans defence yet again allowed the spare man to be unmarked in the box as the 3rd goal was a replica of the first - a shot across James was well saved only to fall to the Eckington striker to slot home.

The Spartans were still working hard to try and play football, Alfie and Sam running their legs off down the wings, Kieren, Jak and Rmarye trying to pass around the Eckington defence andonly being thwarted by some good defending.

The boys second came soon, after some good work at a corner Jak Betts bundled the ball home for 3-2.

But, yet again, Eckington ran down the other end - almost straight from the kick-off and scored a soft goal for a 4-2 half time score.

Time for some words from Dan!

The second half was a complete contrast - the Spartans defence was dominant - taking on board everything the coaches had said, the midfield and forwards were on their game. Luckily for Eckington, their goalie was on good form. After not being tested at all in the first half, he made a string of fine saves before Kieren slammed the ball home to the goalies left for 4-3.

The boys continued this form, outwitting Eckington with some great passes into spaces for Spartans to run onto - Rmarye twice hit the bar from the left before Sam got the equaliser. 4-4 with not long left. The Spartans were by far the better team now, confident, strong and looking like they wanted to win. The Spartans parents were in full voice too!

For a good while, the Eckington team didn't mount a serious attack and when they got through the defensive team of Josh, Cam, Pav and James dealt with everything comfortably, in stark contrast to the first half.

Then came the winner! Again, good work from the whole team found Rmarye ready to fire in the go-ahead goal. What a turn around - five minutes left! The final whistle could not come soon enough.

A fantastic game of football from two well matched sides, with the Spartans inflicting the first defeat of the season on Eckington - next up another tough game in the Cup Quater Final against Swinton Spartans.

One final note is that it was Pav's last game for the club before moving on to pastures new. Many thanks Pav and good luck for the future!
