Spartans win in best performance of the season

Posted by admin on March 14, 2013

With just two games left in the season, the Spartans played the best football since the formation of the club 18 months ago. The boys doing in a game what they have been doing in training for a number of weeks.

The weather was VERY cold and had a few flurries of snow as game one started - the pitch in remarkable condition after the snow and rain of the last few days. The Spartans were kicking down the hill in the first half and took full advantage from the first kick-off, playing passes around and through the Staveley midfield and defence to set up a number of early chances and it was not long till he first goal came as Kieren skipped around defenders before knocking the ball home for a great individual goal. The Spartans kept the pressure on and soon after Sam passed through to Rmarye to score the second - has Rmarye found his best position?

Stavely tried to play as well, but playing up the hill, their best chances came from long kicks from the goalie, however poor shooting and good defence (yet again) from Josh and Cameron meant that the only work James had to do in the first half was a couple of goal kicks.  The third goal as a classic. Stavely gave away a free kick just on the half way line. Josh took the kick and passed through midfield Kieren who found Sam in space,. Sam ran on and passed to Rmarye just outside the box, Rmarye took a few steps with the ball then buried it in the goalies far corner!  Half time 3-0.

The second half was much the same, only blotted by a goal from Staveley after a miss hit goalkick fell to a Stavely player who calmly fired home as James tried to recover to his goal. For a few minutes after this, Staveley put on some pressure, but the Spartans calmed down and got back to playing football. The next goal again came after great work through the middle from Betsy and Rmarye (plaing the ball around the Staveley defence), the shot came back off the goalpost only for Logan H to fire home into the roof of the net. 4-1. The scoring was completed when more great midfield work found Rmarye who fired in, the goalie making a great save, for the rebound to fall to Sam to fire home. Credit must go to the Staveley goalie who kept the score respectable in the second half. Final score 5-1.

Game two continued in the same vein. Passing around and through the Staveley midfield and good running off the wings in to space. The first goal came as Alfie was fed in and he calmly rounded the goalie and slipped home for 6-1. The midfield was particularly good for the Spartans - getting the ball back when they lost it and making sure that Staveley had very few opportunities. The next Spartans goal came from the product of implementing what had been worked on in training. Passes were pinged about through the team and eventually got to Jack MB who crossed for Morgan to place home for 7-1. After this the Spartans kept up the pressure and the score was kept down as the Staveley goalie made a number of blocks and saves. Half time 7-1.

Playing downhill in the second half the Spartans kept up the pressure, Pav playing in midfield while William and Aman kept things (mostly) tight at the back. A great move down the left deserved a goal as Aman fired in but had his shot saved. The next goal came after some good pressure for Blade to get a well deserved goal as the Spartans swarmed around. However, just to spoil Jacks clean sheet, Staveley got a goal back - the ball bobbled around in the box and the Spartans didn't manage to clear and they fired home. But, this did not stop the Spartans and they completed the scoring (after some more blocks and saves from the Staveley goalie) as Morgan fired into the roof of the net for his second of the game.

Overall, the most complete game in 18 months.

This game secured at least third place in the division. A 35-0 away in our final game at AFC Dronfield in two weeks would see the Spartans finish second...
