Another Tournament Win

Posted by admin on July 10, 2012

On what turned out to be a rare sunny day this summer, the Spartans played their second tournament of the summer and came away with a second win.

They boys played three group games against Norton Lees, Nether Green and Hallam Rangers and won each one comfortably while not conceding a goal. Some confident defending all round and good quality finishing meant that the semi's were always a possibility.

The semi final pitched the Spartans as group winners against Millmoor Juniors (best runner up from all the groups). Millmoor are in next seasons top division and showed why, with good movement and passing. This was definitely the hardest game of the day - requiring concentration and hard work from start to finish. Chances were at a premium with Millmoor probably having the most possession overall. However, both teams failed to score in normal time so - off to penalties...

Millmoor were first up... in net James - save!!

The Spartans up next - scored!!

1-0 up after one round, all going well. However, Millmoor started to score theirs and Spartans had one saved. So after 5 each we were tied at 4-4. Sudden death. James in goal was getting close to plenty of their shots, but they were still going in. The Spartans were hitting the corners each time to score. 8-8. Then Millmoor hit the post! If the Spartans score they're through... bottom corner!!!

So, off to the Final against Crosspool Juniors. The game started quite quickly and it looked like it might be an easier game with the Spartans scoring early on. However, Crosspool have a secret weapon and his throw-ins are HUGE! The Spartans found themselves defending plenty of balls in their own penalty area from HUGE throw-ins and eventually one fell to a Crosspool player who equalised. More of the same to the end of the game with the Spartans trying to score on the break and Crosspool firing long balls and throw-ins to try and break the deadlock. The game finished 1-1. Five minutes extra time failed to split the teams so off to pnalties again.

This time the Spartans stepped up first and scored. Crosspool hit the bar. 1-0

Spartans score. Crosspool score. 2-1

Spartans have one saved! Crosspool have one saved. 2-1

Spartans score. Crosspool have one saved. 3-1

Spartans win!!!!

A very enjoyable day and some great performances, topped off with the Lord Mayor giving out the winners medals.
