A bad start to 2014 for Spartans U10 Red

Posted by admin on January 7, 2014

The Spartans get the game underway for a 12.30 kick off away to Wickersley on a cold Sunday, January 5th, 2014 for their first game of the year. The Spartans start off looking very rusty with the cold and Christmas break seeming to affect the players state of mind as well as footballing ability.

Wickersley open the scoring with a very easy goal that is handed to them by the Spartans defence to make it 1-0.

Wickersley pressure the Spartans and are easily on top, the pressure sees them win a corner and from the resulting corner kick make it 2-0 with the Spartans yet to wake up and arrive in the game.

Jacob in the goal makes some great saves, coming out when called upon and keeping the Spartans in it.
More poor defending by the whole team sees Wickersley score their 3rd of the game to make it 3-0. Matt is called upon to play in defence and does so well putting in some good tackles and working tirelessly.

Wickersley are able to exploit a gap in the Spartans defence with three of their players queuing up to score, 4-0 to Wickersley.

Jacob is having to work in the goal and does so well keeping Wickersley at bay until Wickersley earn another corner and fire home their fifth goal of the half from the corner kick.

And so the half ends in what is possibly one of the Spartans poorer performances of the season so far ... in an effort to fire the boys up and regain some of that spark that we all know they have the boys are encouraged to work for the ball, not to stand and wait for the ball to come to them but go and get it and put some passion and effort into their game. They are asked not to stand off and allow Wickesrley space but to fight for each other, play as a team and be the first to every second ball.

The second half starts off with the boys showing a little more of the effort and passion that we are used to seeing but Wickersley break free early and are the first to score in the second half bringing the score to 6-0. The Spartans respond well and Josh works well down the right getting in a shot that ultimately sees a Wickersley player score an own goal for the Spartans first 6-1.

The Spartans seem to wake up a little and start to work harder, more good work down the right by Josh sees him get the ball to Morgan who fires in the Spartans second goal 6-2.

The Spartans have no substitutes and are forced to play a man down with only 5 outfield players as Morgan comes off injured after a crunching tackle. Wickersley are able to take advantage and score their 7th from a free kick, 7-2.

Jacob pulls off another good save that sees Wickersley awarded a corner but thankfully it comes to nothing. Morgan is able to come back on and play through the pain, down the Wickersley end of the pitch the Spartans play some good football which sees them look dangerous and they are really unlucky not to score their third. The game ends 7-2 with the Spartans putting in a better shift in the second half that effectively sees them draw it 2-2. But the poor first half performance coming in 5-0 down was just too much to claw back and gain a result from. All in all the poorest first half the boys have had all season...too many mince pies and sherries at Christmas?

Plenty to work at in training ... set pieces to start with, we need to be able to retain the ball from our own goal kicks, throw ins and centres.

UTS, forever onward and upward!
